Nurse practitioners (NPs) have completed advanced training and hold advanced certification that qualifies them to manage acute and chronic medical conditions. After taking a patient’s history and administering a physical exam, they may diagnose medical problems or order further diagnostics tests. Their background and training also qualifies them to prescribe medications, order treatments, perform sets of established procedures within their scope of specialization, and refer patients to specialists for advanced treatment.
